How often should I have an eye exam?
Eye Exams for Adults
For adults, it is recommended you get an eye exam at least every 2 years. This number may vary depending on your needs, but the frequency you should get an eye exam depends on your age and risk for developing eye diseases. Adults who have not received an eye exam and are without risk of symptoms should schedule an eye exam at age 40. Adults without risk factors aged 40 to 54 should schedule an eye exam every 1 to 2 years. For seniors, an exam every year or two is recommended.
Eye Exams for Children
For children, eye exams are a bit different. In the first three years of infancy, a child should have his or her vision checked along with normal pediatric checkups. During the most crucial period of eye development (3 to 6) an eye exam should be scheduled every year. After that period exams should be scheduled every 2 years.
Comprehensive Eye Exam
These are the basic guidelines for scheduling a routine eye exam. Individuals with a family history of eye disease, those diagnosed with an eye disease, or those with high risks for diabetes should have an eye exam annually. Routine eye examinations are the best way to keep you seeing the world clearly.
Schedule an Eye Exam
It is recommended you schedule a comprehensive eye exam to detect symptoms early, regardless of age. Your age, race, and past ocular and medical history should be considered when deciding to schedule an eye exam.
If you are concerned about or would like to identify any possible risks, you should schedule an eye exam as soon as possible. An eye exam cost will depend on your provider. Your age and at-risk factors will affect how much is an eye exam.
